Pious Amissah is an incoming Ph.D. student focusing on African art, with particular interest in textiles as forms of visual culture and systems of communication. His research explores how textiles such as Kente, Adinkra, and other African cloth traditions encode identity, status, and cultural knowledge. With a particular interest in curatorial practice, provenance, and the histories of collection and display, his work engages postcolonial and decolonial frameworks to examine how objects move across contexts and how museums interpret and present them.
Pious holds an MA in Arts Administration from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree in Textiles from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He has worked as an art teacher in Ghana, teaching courses such as textiles and Art appreciation at the Ejisu Senior High School and Baidoe Bonsoe Senior High School. He currently serves as a Graduate Assistant at the Eskenazi Museum of Art, where he conducts object-based and provenance research, contributes to exhibitions, and facilitate tours.
