This course provides a survey of artworks primarily produced in Europe during the twentieth century as well as an introduction to modernist art criticism-one interpretive tradition through which their significance has been assessed. Art objects are contextualized in terms of their social and historical contexts, theoretical justifications, and critical receptions: from the utopianism of Constructivism to the subversions of Dada; from the spontaneity of Art Informel to Nouveau réalisme; as well as more recent trends. Course content includes influential figures such as Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Hannah Höch, Jean Dubuffet, Hans Haacke, Adrian Piper, Gerhard Richter, and Ai Weiwei.
