This course, designed to introduce the non-specialist to the world of art and visual culture, will be structured as a parallel study of, and comparison between, Western-European and East-Asian artistic traditions. Its emphasis will be on the formal, iconographic, and contextual analysis of artworks. We will explore the historical development of art and the varied purposes to which it has been put over the centuries. Learning a new visual vocabulary will enable students to understand, discuss, and write about a wide range of styles, periods, cultures, and media. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of the roles that art plays in the world. No previous knowledge of art or art history is required; we will start slowly and create a solid foundation on which to build subsequent understanding and discussion.
