Course Description

How did art become history? This course will consider this question by examining the various strategies that emerged for defining, thinking, talking, and writing about art in the Western World from the very early through late-modern periods. These materials, which include philosophical discussion, instructional manuals, descriptions, and histories, will be analyzed historically as products of their respective cultures and methodologically as examples of analytical strategies, some of which remain current in contemporary scholarly practice.
