Ph.D. student Alexandra Nickolaou has received two U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, which will support her study of the Akan language from Summer 2023 through Spring 2024. In Summer 2023, Alexandra will study the Akan language in an immersive study abroad experience in Ghana; then, she will continue her Akan studies on the IU Bloomington campus throughout the 2023-2024 academic year.
FLAS Fellowships are funded by the United States Department of Education in support of graduate and undergraduate students studying less commonly taught languages and cultures, in particular, those considered to be of critical interest to the United States. They are intended to promote the training of students who plan to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is a prerequisite for success.
