This course traces the history of visual culture in Europe from the introduction of photography through the rise of cinema. It considers the dynamics of modernism in relation to the processes of modernization, such as technological innovation, the advent of mass culture and spectacle, and socio-political change. Among the artists, architects, and designers discussed will be: Édouard Manet, Peter Behrens, Le Corbusier, Dziga Vertov, and Fernand Léger. In addition to being an introduction to European culture in the mid-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, the course provides a forum for the development of visual (and verbal) acumen- how to look at, think about, and discuss visual culture.
