This introductory course will survey the art produced from the 1980s until today, ranging from the aesthetics of postmodernism to the multiple contexts of globalization. We will approach contemporary art through, first, the analysis of art mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, video art, and digital art; second, the description of visual and formal qualities; and, third, the context of creation. The course will provide a critical overview of recent art movements in a global scope through a thematical approach. Finally, we will discuss the intersection between global contemporary art and the political, social and economic forces that inform and structure its production, dissemination and consumption.
