Moving from the almost hallucinatory vividness of Jan van Eyck's panels to the loving fracture of Johannes Vermeer's canvases, this course tracks the cultural and historical work of naturalism in the early modern Low Countries, along the way, students will have the chance to study the origins of art theory, the development of regional identities, the place of images in religious conflict, the birth of scientific observation, and early ideas about meditation.
