- Above class meets with AFRI-A 731.
This course will center on discussion of African art and its intersection with aesthetic concepts, museum politics, art display techniques, and colonialism. The seminar will focus on an in-depth analysis of the proliferation of African art collections in major institutions around the world including the Dapper and Quai Branly Museums in France, the Horniman Museum, Pitt Rivers and British Museums in England, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the African Art Museum at the Smithsonian in the United States. Questions of representation of African art will be fundamental to framing class discussions. Methodologies for the analysis of African art display will be reviewed and developed through readings and the close examination of objects in the collection of the Eskenazi Museum of Art.
