Ever since the eighteenth century, students in a range of disciplines have been fascinated by the history of art. Come join this scholarly tradition in a course that will focus on the history of the visual arts in the Western world from Ancient Egypt (c. 3000 B.C.) to the end of the Gothic era in Europe (c. A.D. 1400). In it, we will examine developments in the "major arts" of painting, sculpture, and architecture, together with works in such media as ceramics, small-scale metalwork, and textiles. In lectures and discussion sections individual works of art will be approached with two specific goals in mind: the understanding 1) of formal structure, artistic innovation, and stylistic development, and 2) of the specific historical and cultural contexts within which works of art were imagined and produced.
