Topic: Impressionism
A survey of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and related movements in the Paris art world from around 1860 to 1890. The course will focus on Edouard Manet, the main members of the Impressionist group (Monet, Renoir, Pissaro, Sisley, Morisot, Cezanne), and the most important members of the following generation, including Seurat, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Toulouse-Lautrec. The course will chronologically follow the rise of the "New Painting" from its beginnings through the eight Impressionist or Independent exhibitions that took place from 1874 to 1886 and their aftermath. We will also pause to study in more detail specific topics, such as the urban transformation of Paris as seen in the period's painting, scenes of leisure and night-time entertainments, the nude and gender representation in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting, etc.
