Course Description

Provides a survey of the Japanese woodblock print from its emergence in the mid-17th century to modern times. Explores technical developments, major genres, and master designers within the context of pictorial traditions, publishing, and urban culture. Addresses aesthetic discourse, censorship, erotica, Japonisme, social identity, print culture, and representation of war.
