The Graduate Certificate program offered by the Department of Art History prepares high school teachers to teach the dual-credit course ARTH-H 100 Introduction to Art History and Visual Culture in the context of IU’s Advance College Project (ACP). Program participants complete an 18-credit hour curriculum taught by IU faculty in the Department of Art History. The program is designed to provide a broad background in the study of art history and the theoretical orientations of the discipline. It offers courses drawn from the following areas: African, American, Ancient Greek and Roman, Contemporary, East Asian, Islamic, Late Antique and Byzantine, Medieval, Modern European, and Renaissance and Baroque art of Europe.
Teachers first must be accepted to the ACP program. See information about, and application instructions for the ACP here. Upon being approved to participate in the ACP, teachers then apply to the Art History Graduate Certificate program via the Indiana University CAS Portal. Applicants should have a B.A. with a major or minor in art history, or a major in an allied discipline (e.g., art and design) and at least two-years of experience teaching art history at the high school level (i.e., through an AP or IB course, or as an aspect of an AP course in art and design.) Applications must include CV, personal statement, list of undergraduate/graduate courses taken in the discipline, transcripts, and lesson materials providing evidence of pedagogy in the discipline (e.g., syllabus, assignments, assessments, etc.)
