This course is a survey of major artists, styles, and movements in global art and architecture from the 15th century to the present. This overview will revolve around crucial moments in the history of art, the formation of different aesthetics, and the politics of representation. The survey will develop chronologically and we will study different cultures, artistic styles and art movements globally. For example, the course will start by looking at 15th and 16th centuries Asian art in China and Japan (Ming and Muromachi dynasties), African art (Benin and Kongo Kingdoms), and European art (Italian Renaissance). We will proceed by exploring 17th-century art from Japan, India and European Baroque and Rococo and move on to the 18th and 19th centuries by looking at the art of Western and Southern Africa, the impact of European colonization, the Qing Dynasty in China and Japan's Meiji Restoration, European art, and the art of Indigenous Americas. Analysis of the art of the 20th century will revolve around global Modernisms and Postmodernisms. Finally, we will study global contemporary art, characterized by its extreme diversity in every sense possible while reflecting on current political, environmental, and social issues, coupled with the impact of the fast-paced evolution of new technologies. Students enrolled in this class are required to take a weekly discussion section in which we will put into practice the ideas, concepts and aesthetic principles learned in class-lectures. We will visit, discuss and work around the Eskenazi Museu of Art and several other art collections in campus.
