Topic: Art, empire, war in east asia
What was the role of art in the development of modern nations across East Asia? How did imperialism shape the legacy and history of art in East Asia throughout the modern era? This course examines the modern concepts and uses of art in China, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea from 1890 to the 1980s. The key theme of this course is how institutions of art aided the construction of nations and the expansion and destruction of empire in the modern era. The course will particularly emphasize art media in relationship to national academies, news media, propaganda and mobilization, political protest, and the memorialization of war. Major themes will include the rejection and absorption of European institutions, traditionalist and modernist media, Japanese imperialism and resistance across East Asia, art and nationalism, and the roles of art and monuments in key flashpoints of controversy in postwar memory.
