Designed as something of a counterpoint to the historiography seminar, this course will introduce students to a range of approaches to visual and material expression that have developed over the past 75 years or so. Said approaches will include iconography, Marxist-informed social history, material culture studies, postmodernism, post-structuralism, feminist critique, semiotics, visual culture studies, and critical race and ethnic studies. There will probably be other topics as well. All told, you will get a good workout as well as a sense of the methodological stakes involved in our discipline.
