This course surveys artistic developments in Flanders and the Netherlands during the 17th century. We will pay special attention to the social and political uses of painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Topics include artistic self-fashioning, commerce and changing social codes, gender and authority, religious conflict, and colonialism and difference.
