ARTH-A 483 VISUAL AND MATERIAL CULTURES OF PLAY (3 CR.)
Surveys the play element of culture, with particular attention to American, Dutch, English, French, German, and Italian societies from the twelfth century to the present. Covers historical background, conceptual framework, and critical vocabulary necessary for understanding the ludic aspects of cultural production. Grapples with questions about the relationship between perception and thought, about the changing social and political functions of idleness, and about the value of intellectual labor.
